I’M NOT SCARED

Summertime in rural southern Italy and Michele (Guiseppe Cristiano) spends the long sunny days riding his bike and running through the vast wheat fields. One day Michele discovers a hole in the ground where a boy his age is chained and imprisoned. He befriends the boy and soon begins to discover why the boy is there, revealing unbelievable secrets for a ten-year old.
This is an eerie and engrossing suspense thriller from Italian director Gabriele Salvatores (Mediterraneo). Beautifully shot views of the Italian countryside are counter-balanced by the dark underbelly of the local village. Loss of innocence is the main theme with some interesting twists thrown in. It does feel stretched at times, and adulthood doesn’t come across as something worth looking forward to from a child’s point of view.
